Description:

Washington George

George Washington, an important book from his personal library with words in his hand tipped in.

“Family Secrets: By Mr. Pratt. Second Edition; Carefully Revised.” London: Printed for T.N. Longman, Paternoster Row, 1798. Volume size of 4” x 6.75”, contemporary full calf, red morocco spine labels. Second edition of Pratt’s popular novel, from the library of George Washington. Light expected age-wear to contemporary calf, with rubbing and splitting to extremities. Internal pages are generally clean with only occasional scattered marks. Good condition with impeccable provenance. The words, “hundred poles” written in his hand, have been tipped in. Ornately bordered bookplate of Benjamin Lincoln Lear, 3.75” x 12.5”, on front paste down beneath Washington’s handwriting.

This phenomenal book was originally part of an auction that included items from the Tobias Lear family (George Washington’s closest confidant and personal secretary). Tobias’ son and George Washington’s godson, Benjamin Lincoln Lear (1791-1832), was born in the President’s House in Philadelphia. Included are color photocopies of the first page of a list titled, “Catalogue of Books received from Washington.” and a second page listing on the first line, “Pratts Family Secrets 5 [Vols.],” believed to have been written by Benjamin Lincoln Lear. The item was sold at a James Julia auction some years back where a Washington battle map sold for over $1 million.
