A group of prints depicting 1st U.S. President George Washington (1732-1799) in his role as Founding Father, Revolutionary War military commander, and statesman, as imagined by both American and European artists in the century following his death. Ca. 1800-1866. Various places. Please refer to catalog photos for additional information related to condition, which is overall good to very good. The largest print measures 11.5" x 17.375." Accompanying the lot is an autograph archival folder from Forest H. Sweet (Battle Creek, Michigan).

The archive includes, in chronological order:

1. Georg Jakob Felsing after Giuseppe Longhi, untitled engraving of a bust portrait of George Washington. N.d. but ca. early-mid 19th C. Printed along the outside of the image: "G. Longhi dis." at lower left, and "G.G. Felsing inc." at lower right. With a blind-embossed stamp at lower left reading: "Louis Rocca in Leipzig." Gently toned but nevertheless a striking image. 8" x 11."

2. Nathaniel Currier, "Washington / The Cincinnatus of the West, / Whom envy dared not hate, / Bequeath'd the name of Washington, / To make man blush was but one!" N.d. but ca. 1835. New York, New York. The color lithograph depicts Washington in military dress as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army quietening his white war horse. The title, poem, publishing, and copyright information appear along the bottom. Evenly toned with minor mat burn. 9.5" x 13.25."

3. Nathaniel Currier, "Surrender of Cornwallis, At York-Town VA. Oct. 1781." Ca. 1845. New York, New York. The color lithograph depicts Washington, Lafayette, Hamilton, and Lincoln receiving the sword from Cornwallis, Tarleton, Chewton, and O'Hara. The title, figure identification labels, publishing, and copyright information appear along the bottom. Unevenly discolored, water-stained, and foxed, with isolated loss, although the image itself is relatively clear. 9.5" x 13.25."

4. An excised book plate, Pl. XIV from John Jay Smith, Second Series, "American Historical and Literary Curiosities…" (New York: Charles B. Richardson, 1860), being a slightly smaller than life size silhouette of Washington's head in profile, with his facsimile signature below. The original description of this plate from Smith's book is: "Plate XIV. - Profile of General Washington, taken by lamp-light, by his friend Samuel Powel, Mayor of Philadelphia, and confirming Stuart's Portrait…" Laid down on a canvas mount. Expected wear including scattered flecked color loss and scuffs. Minor foxing to the edges. Else very good. 11.5" x 17.375."

5. Charles B.J. Févret de Saint-Mémin, "George Washington." Ca. 1866. New York, New York. Engraving showing a bust portrait of Washington in military uniform, in profile facing left. Title, artist, and publication information is printed at bottom. Scattered light foxing, else near fine. Unevenly trimmed to a completed size of 6.375" x 9.5."

Unless otherwise indicated, we do our own in-house world-wide shipping!

Applicable shipping and handling charges will be added to the invoice. We offer several shipping options, and remain one of the few auction houses that proudly provides professional in-house shipping as an option to our clients. All items will ship with a signature required option, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice. If any changes to the shipping address need to be made, you must inform us immediately.***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.

Third-Party Shipping Option: If a third-party shipper is preferred, the buyer is responsible for contacting them directly to make shipping arrangements. For your convenience, we have provided some recommended shippers. For your protection, we will require a signed release from you, confirming your authorization for us to release your lots to your specified third-party. At that point, our responsibility and insurance coverage for your item(s) ceases. Items picked up by third-party shippers are required to pay Connecticut sales tax. Items requiring third-party shipping due to being oversized, fragile or bulky will be denoted in the item description.
