George Washington Post Mortem Commemorations Within this Historic 1799 Newspaper, Including from President John Adams.

 

Newspaper, Massachusetts Mercury (Boston Friday, December 27, 1799), 4 pages, 12.5" x 20". Expected center fold, several tiny holes, else bright and in excellent condition with small separation along top of fold line.

 

A significant and important newspaper issued barely two weeks after the death of George Washington with includes three full columns of quotes, letters, comments and reflections on his him and his life. Several excerpts are shown below:

 

"Respecting the Death Of The Illustrious Washington"

 

"The virtues and services of this unequalled  Mortal, having commanded the warmest affections of the People of the United States - his loss is felt with a poignancy of grief, which no other misfortune could have caused … We therefore, with sympathizing affiduity, search the darkened columns of every paper which reaches us, and carefully select each paragraph which involves the interesting subject … "

 

 

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Gentleman of the House of Representatives

THE letter herewith transmitted will inform you that it has pleaded Divine Providence to remove from this life, our excellent fellow citizen GEORGE WASHINGTON. By the purity of his character, and a long series of services to his country, rendered illustrious through the world, it remains for an affectionate and grateful people, in whole hearts he can never die, to pay fruitful honor to his memory.

SIR, Mount Vernon, Dec. 16, 1799

It is with inexpressible grief, that I have to announce to you the death of the great and good General Washington. He died last evening between 10 and 11 o'clock after a short illness of about 24 hours …  TOBIAS LEAR

 

… Our WASHINGTON is no more! The hero, the sage, and the patriot of America - the man in whom in times of danger, every eye was turned and all hopes were placed, lives now only in his own great actions, and in the hearts of an affectionate and affected people

 

Resolved, that this house will wait on the President of the U. States, in condolence of the great event.

 

Resolved that the Speaker's Chair will be shrouded with black, and that the members and officers of the house wear black during the session.

 

Resolved, That a Committee in conjunction with one from the Senate, be appointed to consider on the most suitable manner of paying honor to the memory of the man FIRST IN WAR, FIRST IN PEACE, and FIRST in the HEARTS of his Countryman …

The President with deep regret announce to the army, the death of its beloved Chief, General GEORGE WASHINGTON. Sharing in the grief which every heart must feel for so heavy  … which is due to the virtues, talents, and ever-memorable services of the illustrious deceased he directs that FUNERAL HONORS be paid to him at all the military stations … "
