George Washington Lapel Medal & Badge from the 1932 Republican Convention

A 1932 Republican National Convention delegate lapel medal with companion identification badge. Both in near fine condition, with expected light surface wear, the lapel medal measuring 5.5" long and the badge measuring 3.75" x 2.25".

The lapel medal consists of two cast-brass and enameled mounts attached to a tricolored ribbon. The "Chicago" mount depicts George Washington and is labeled "1782-1932, Republican National Convention" while the upper "1932 Delegate" mount depicts the Capitol Building framed by two American flags. The lapel medal has two Bastian Bros. Co. (Rochester, New York) hallmarks stamped verso. The company manufactured custom pins, buttons, and badges for specialized interest groups.

The badge once belonged to Arthur J. Conner, a New Hampshire delegate who served on the committee responsible for informing Vice President Curtis that he had been officially reelected. The card reads: "Delegate to Republican National Convention, Chicago - June 1932…You are hereby extended the courtesy of the city of Chicago," and bears the facsimile signature of Chicago Major Anton J. Cernak (1873-1933).

The Republican National Convention, held between June 14-16, 1932 at Chicago Stadium, was attended by 1,154 delegates who nominated President Herbert Hoover (1874-1964) and Vice President Charles Curtis (1860-1936) as the G.O.P.'s official candidates. Hoover and Curtis won the Party nomination in a 98% landslide. According to contemporary newspaper accounts, the Convention was absolute pandemonium. Marching bands, a pipe organ, "Hoover horns," and toy balloons were crowd-stopping highlights.

Despite the excitement of Republican delegates, Democratic presidential candidate Franklin D. Roosevelt (1884-1945) would win the 1932 presidential election that fall. Roosevelt's unprecedented twelve-year-long presidential term began in March 1933.
