[George Washington]. Three complete issues of The Gentleman's Magazine, a popular monthly publication founded in London, England, by Edward Cave in January 1731. It ran uninterrupted for almost 200 years and was the first to use the term magazine for a periodical. It originated as a storehouse of essays and articles culled from other publications such as books and pamphlets. Its motto, "E pluribus unum," or "Out of many, one," represents these numerous sources combined to assemble one monthly issue.

The collection comprises:

1.) The Gentleman's Magazine: For August, 1775, pages, 5.25" x 8.25", printed in London by Sylvanus Urban. The periodical contains several significant texts related to the Revolutionary War: the "Declaration of the Causes and Necessity of Taking Up Arms," adopted by the Second Continental Congress on July 6, 1775; reporting on the Battle of Bunker Hill, including a memorial poem dedicated to Lieutenant Bard of the 35th Regiment, who was killed; and a piece announcing that "the Congress have appointed George Washington, Esq. of Virginia, Generalissimo of the American forces." Disbound from a larger volume and in very good condition, with separation to several of the later pages at the spine.

2.) The Gentleman's Magazine: For September, 1775, pages, 5.25" x 8.25", printed in London by Sylvanus Urban. The periodical contains several significant pieces related to the Revolutionary War: an extraordinary diagram entitled "Plan of the Redoubt and Intrenchment on the Heights of Charles Town (commonly called Bunker's Hill) opposite Boston, in New-England, attacked and carried by his Majesty's Troops, June 17, 1775"; the Congressional Resolution of July 31, 1775, rejecting Lord North's Conciliatory Proposal that attempted to divide the colonies and weaken the move towards independence; and the text of a letter from George Washington to Lt. Gen. Gage, regarding the inhumane treatment of prisoners of war. Disbound from a larger volume and in very good to fine condition.

3.) The Gentleman's Magazine: For June, 1776, pages, 5.25" x 8.25", printed in London by Sylvanus Urban. The periodical contains several significant texts related to the Revolutionary War: resolutions passed by the Continental Congress on March 23, 1776, authorizing privateers to engage against British ships, as "the Petitions of the United Colonies to the King, for the redress of great and manifold grievances, have not only been rejected, but treated with Scorn and contempt"; a proclamation published by George Washington on his taking possession of Boston; and a letter by Washington to Lord Sterling, announcing the retreat of Howe's army from Boston and warning that New York may be their next object. Disbound from a larger volume and in very good to fine condition.
