The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian award of our Government. It is awarded by the President of the United States to those persons whom he deems to have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural of other significant public or private endeavors. The medal may be awarded to citizens of other nations and may be awarded posthumously.

The recipients for that year were:

  • Henry "Hank" Aaron
  • William Henry Cosby, Jr.
  • Placido Domingo
  • Peter Ferdinand Drucker
  • Katherine Graham
  • Donald A. Henderson
  • Irving Kristol
  • Nelson R. Mandela
  • Gordon E. Moore
  • Nancy Reagan
  • Fred McFeeley Rogers
  • A.M. Rosenthal

The Presidential Medal of Freedom, as the nation’s highest civilian award, makes it the civilian counterpart of the Medal of Honor. The Medal of Freedom was meant to be reserved, as John F. Kennedy put it in 1963, to recognize “an especially meritorious contribution to the security of national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public and private endeavors.” This interesting odd cast of characters, were chosen in 2002 by President Bush and includes alongside Nelson Mandela and Nancy Reagan the names of Bill Cosby, and Mister Rogers. This certainly was a most unique year for this ceremony, one which only the unfolding of time would reveal!
