Description:

George V of England King

George V Personally Inscribed "Four Generations" Cabinet Card Photo Showing Victoria I, Edward VII, George V, & Edward VIII!

The iconic W. & D. Downey cabinet card showing four generations of British royalty, inscribed and dated by the future George V (1865-1936) as "July 16th / 94 / 'Four Generations'" at the bottom. The albumen print is mounted on a cream stock card bearing Downey's London address at bottom, and the whole is attached at the four corners to a red stock card. An isolated abrasion to the photo surface is located to the right of Victoria's head near the torso of George V, but this does not materially detract from the image and is mentioned just for accuracy. Expected light surface wear especially to card edges, else near fine. 4.25" x 6.5". Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity from Fraser's Autographs (London, England) dated January 4, 2009, as well as photocopied pages from the original Fraser's Autograph Mail Order Catalogue 154, showing this inscribed photo as Lot 75156, estimated at £1,250.

This remarkable photograph, taken on the day the future Edward VIII was baptized in the Green Drawing Room of White Lodge by the Archbishop of Canterbury on July 16, 1894, shows four reigning and future monarchs of the British Empire: Victoria I (1819-1901); Edward VII (1841-1910); George V (1865-1936); and Edward VIII (1894-1972). Primogeniture, or the practice by which succession is granted to the eldest son, is thus dramatically illustrated in visual form. Interestingly, the baby that was baptized that day--the infamous Duke of Windsor--would break that tradition when he abdicated the British throne in December 1936 in order to marry the American socialite Wallace Simpson.
