Clark George

George Rogers Clark Signed Pay Order During the Northwest Campaign

Single page manuscript document signed, 6.5" x 3". Signed “G R Clark,” and dated "December 7, 1786". Expected folds, page evenly toned with faint handling marks. Slight spreading to ink, otherwise with lovely strong contrast.

Virginia-born Revolutionary War officer (1752–1818) whose success in capturing crucial lands in the Northwest Territory greatly weakened British control and influence and earned him the sobriquet ‘Conqueror of the Old Northwest.’

Pay order reads at the top, with original spelling retained, “Buckner Pittman Dr to James Egnew 14 Days work at one Dollor a Day. 4:4:0.” Under the pay order Pittman writes to Clark: “Sir Pleas to pay the above account and you will much obblige your fiend [sic, friend] to serve Buckner Pittman.” Signed at the bottom by Clark. During the Northwest Campaign of 1786-1787, (to which this document pertains), Revolutionary War General, George Rogers Clarke, sought to enforce the Treaties he had negotiated with the Indians only several years earlier.  The British ultimately ceded the entire Northwest Territory to the United States in the 1783 Treaty of Paris.

Pittman served as Clark’s Boat Master for three years.
