George Robert Lewis's Sketches for 1821 Book
Archive

George Robert Lewis prepared these sketches of landscapes in Germany for his contributions to Thomas Frognall Dibdin's three-volume Bibliographical, Antiquarian, and Picturesque Tour in France and Germany. In 1818, former First Lord of the Admiralty and Home Secretary Earl Spencer (1758-1834) commissioned Dibdin to purchase books on the continent, and Dibdin described his journey in the illustrated volumes. In 1822, Dibdin sold the entire collection of original drawings by Lewis and other eminent artists through a London auctioneer.
