Description:

McClellan George

PSA/DNA slabbed signature clip of Union Civil War commander George McClellan (1826-1885) on a cream card stock signed “very truly yours Geo. McClellan”,   inscribed "Orange", and dated "Nov 16 1877". In near fine condition, with one minor horizontal paper fold. The card measures 5" x 3" while the slab measures 7.125" x 4.25".

McClellan autographed this card in Orange, New Jersey just three weeks after his election as 24th Governor of New Jersey. During his three-year-long administration, McClellan reduced the state deficit, slashed taxes, modernized the state militia, and promoted industrialization.

McClellan had been a surprisingly popular gubernatorial candidate considering his very public demotion during the Civil War. McClellan had been appointed Major General early in the conflict, and served as General-in-chief of the Union Army for a four-month period in late 1861 to early 1862. Yet while he excelled in logistics, McClellan's battlefield strategy was passive, lethargic, and less than creative; he was dismissed by Lincoln after Antietam.
