Description:

Washington George

George & Martha Washington Portraits

Pair of late nineteenth century portraits of 1st U.S. President George Washington (1732-1799) and First Lady Martha Washington (1731-1802). Each is an unframed oil on canvas signed "Frost" and dated 1866 and 1871 respectively verso.

This stately depiction of George Washington, after the iconic bust portrait by George Stuart, shows the Father of our Country dressed in a powdered wig, lace neckerchief, and black frock coat with high collar. A column can be seen in silhouette against the reddish background. With expected craquelure, and minor isolated frame rubbing along the canvas edges. Relined, though a square has been excised verso revealing the original signature, date, and canvas dimensions: "25 - 30 / Frost 1866". The painting was repaired in a few isolated areas not affecting the face. Very good to near fine. 25" x 30" x 1.125".

The companion piece depicting Martha Washington, probably inspired by Rembrandt Peale's portrait, shows the First Lady in a lace fichu and black shawl secured by a mourning brooch. An architectural element similar to that found in George's portrait is visible at the sitter's left. With expected craquelure, and minor isolated frame rubbing along the canvas edges. Relined, though a square has been excised verso revealing the original signature, date, and canvas dimensions: "25 - 30 / Frost 1871". Martha's right cheek has been retouched. Else very good to near fine.25" x 30" x 1.125".

A handsome pair of portraits of the Washingtons, executed within a decade of the nation's centennial!
