George IV DS "apprehend...all Pirates, Free-Booters, and Sea-Rovers", Signed as Prince Regent

2pp of a bifolium, measuring 7.75" x 12.5", Carlton House, London, dated April 7, 1815. Signed by the Prince Regent "George PR" and addressed to the Lord Chancellor, John Lord Eldon. Instructing Eldon to affix "Our Great Seal of Our United Kingdom of Great Britain…to an Instrument bearing date with these Presents containing Our Commission to Charles Bryan Tarbutt Commander of the Ship 'Apollo' Burthen Six Hundred and Fifty two Tons carrying Sixteen Guns and Sixty Men authorizing and empowering him or any other the Commander of the said Ship for the Time being to apprehend seize and secure all Pirates Free-Booters [*raider or pillager] and Sea-Rovers together with their Ships and Vessels Goods and Merchandizes which they shall meet with in any of the Ports and Places or upon any of the Coasts of India or in any other Seas whatsoever…" Countersigned at the end by Home Secretary, Henry Addington, Lord Sidmouth. With flattened folds and a few minor spots of soiling. Boldly signed, with ink transference at the lower portion of the document where it was folded. Accompanied by the original folder used by Maggs Bros. Ltd., Ca. 1994 where this sold for the equivalent of over $700 27 years ago . Expected wear to the folder, with original pencil notations.

The Prince of Wales was made Prince Regent in 1811, following the Regency Act of 1811. George ruled in his father's place until the King's death in 1820. The "Apollo" was launched in 1812, and her captain Charles Bryan Tarbutt received a letter of Marque to said as a privateer. On April 15, 1815, Captain Tarbutt sailed for Bengal and Bombay, arriving at his destination on January 2, 1816. After securing a considerable load of sugar cargo, he sailed for home, returning to London on July 17, 1816. The ship continued to trade with India under a license from the East India Company until 1823 when she was wrecked. Henry Addington, 1st Viscount Sidmouth (1757-1844) was a British Tory statesman and served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1801 to 1804.

In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.
