George III of England
London, England, July 13, 1785
George III Signed Pay Order for Lieutenant in 100th Regt. Of Foot
DS
A payment order signed "George R[ex]" in brown ink and countersigned by George Yonge, 5th Baronet, as Secretary of War. 2pp, measuring 8" x 13", St. James, London, dated July 13, 1785. With flattened folds and light toning and soiling throughout. There is mounting residue along the edge of verso. Large and bold signatures.

The king instructs William Wyndham Grenville and Constantine Lord Mulgrave, Joint Paymaster Generals of Our Guards, Garrisons, and Land Forces, to make a payment to "William Isles, the Sum of Two Shillings and four pence a day, for his Half pay as a Reduced Lieutenant of Our last mentioned Regiment in the room of Lieutenant James Clarke Satterthwaite, as aforesaid to commence the Tenth day of June 1785…"

Lieutenant William Isles had been an officer in the 100th Regiment of Foot, commanded by Major General Thomas Bruce. This document describes how he petitioned to exchange his commission in the regiment with that of the half pay of Lieutenant James Clarke Satterthwaite, a Reduced Officer in the late 86th Regiment of Foot, which had been disbanded in 1763. The 100th Regiment of Foot, or the Loyal Lincolnshire Regiment, was an infantry regiment of the British Army, formed in 1780 and disbanded in 1785. Raised in Ireland by Colonel Thomas Humberston, the regiment was soon taken command of by Lieutenant-General Thomas Bruce in August 1780. It was dispatched to India shortly after being raised and fought in the Second Anglo-Mysore War.

James Clarke Satterthwaite (1746-1825) would go on to sit in the House of Commons during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, serving for Cockermouth (1784-1790), Carlisle (1790-1791), and Haslemere (1791-1802).
