Description:

George I Important Quaker Act

4pp, measuring 7.5" x 11", England, dated Ca. 1715. London: printed by John Baskett, 1715. A short booklet, paginated 249-252, detailing the act of accepting Quakers. Reading "An Act that the Solemn Affirmation and Declaration of the People called Quakers, shall be Accepted instead of an Oath in the usual Form." The oath declares George I as the rightful king of the realm and James III of Scotland as a pretender with no claim to the throne. Quakers who took the oath swore their allegiance to King George, promising to "be Faithful against all Traiterous [sic] Conspiracies and Attempts whatsoever, which shall be made against his Person, Crown, or Dignity…And I will be True and Faithful to the Succession of the Crown against him the said James, and all other Persons whatsoever, as the same is and stands Settled by an Act…to the late Queen Anne…" With light toning and soiling throughout. Paper covers are worn, with chipping at the edges. There is a hole through several pages, but the document is still readable.

Quakerism began in England following the English Civil War (1642-1651), founded by George Fox. It gained a considerable following in England and Wales, but followers faced persecution by Protestants, who believed Quaker teachings to be blasphemous. The Quaker Act of 1662 made it illegal to refuse to take the Oath of Allegiance to the Crown, but under the reign of James II of England, persecution declined due to the Declaration of Indulgence (1687-1688), and stopped under the Act of Toleration 1689.

Queen Anne was the daughter of James II and reigned from 1707 until her death in 1714. She was succeeded by her second cousin, George I, the first British monarch of the House of Hanover. During his reign, the Jacobites attempted to depose him and install Anne's Catholic half-brother, James Stuart, to be king but were unsuccessful. James gained the nickname "the Old Pretender".
