George H.W. Bush Double Signatures! U.S. Liaison in China SP & Signed Provenance Letter as CIA Director

A pair of items relating to 41st U.S. President George H.W. Bush (1924-2018), including a signed and inscribed presentation photograph of Bush as Director of the U.S. Liaison Office in the People's Republic of China, and a companion typed letter signed by Bush as Director of the Central Intelligence Agency.

The lot is comprised of:

1. A glossy, black and white photograph depicting Bush standing near the front wall of the U.S. Liaison Office in Beijing, signed and inscribed in blue felt tip pen in the lower right corner as "Robert Orth / Best wishes / George Bush." Stamped "Feb 26 1976" verso. Expected wear including superficial wrinkles and marginal edge wear, else near fine. 8.125" x 10."

George H.W. Bush served as the Director of the U.S. Liaison Office in the People's Republic of China between September 1974 - December 1975. Bush earnestly set about deepening the mutual understanding between the previously estranged nations. He became known as the "bicycling ambassador" because of his frequent jaunts around the city of Beijing.

2. A 1p typed letter signed by Bush as "George Bush" in his new role as Director of the Central Intelligence Agency. The letter dated February 20, 1976 is on "Central Intelligence Agency / Washington, D.C. / 20505" letterhead. A slight trace of adhesive at lower left, else pristine and without folds. 6.25" x 8.5."

Bush wrote to Kansas EMT and dedicated autograph collector Robert Orth (ca. 1936-2005), "Thank you so much for your thoughtful letter…Attached is the autographed picture you requested…"

Bush had assumed leadership of the CIA just three weeks earlier, on January 30, 1976. His directorship lasted until January 1977.

George H.W. Bush served as president between 1989-1993.

We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.
