George H. W. Bush TLS Announcing His Run for President

41st U.S. President George H. W. Bush (1924-2018) typed letter signed, "George", 1p, on his blue-bordered vice presidential correspondence card measuring 6.375" x 4.25", Washington, November 23, 1987.  Blue and gold embossed seal of the vice president at top left. In fine condition.

Bush writes to Alfred H. Kingon (b. 1931) in full, "Thank you for your comments regarding the Houston debate. I was delighted to get your reaction. I do think the debate proved to be a plus for me, but it in no way diminishes my intention to out-hustle the other candidates. /  Thanks, my friend, for those encouraging words." He then adds a handwritten postscript, "All Best to Jackie". 

After serving in the U.S. Navy, Bush entered the oil business and became a millionaire by age forty. A successful politician who represented Texas in the House of Representatives from 1967 to 1971, he was appointed U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations by President Nixon, and under President Ford, he served as a diplomat to China. Bush directed the CIA for one year before joining Ronald Reagan's presidential ticket, serving two terms as vice president. 

Bush wrote this letter at the beginning of his 1988 presidential campaign and references the first Republican candidates' debate in Houston on October 28, 1987, during which he faced off with Bob Dole, Jack Kemp, Pat Roberton, Al Haig and Pete du Pont. Bush secured the nomination and defeated his Democratic rival, Michael Dukakis. The Bush administration witnessed the invasion of Panama, the Gulf War, the signing of the North Atlantic Free Trade Agreement, and the collapse of the Soviet Union. 

Alfred H. Kingon is a Wall Street investment advisor and publisher of Financial World and Saturday Review. He served as Assistant Secretary of Commerce from 1983 to 1984, as President Reagan's White House Cabinet Secretary from 1985 to 1987, and as the U.S. Ambassador to the European Union from 1987 to 1989.
