Description:

Former President George H.W. Bush thanks actor Paul Newman, a lifelong Democrat, for apparently finding a way to decline being honored at events: " Perhaps you have found the true cure to 'honorrhea.'"

GEORGE H. W. BUSH (b. 1924) Displayable Typed Letter Signed " George Bush" on his 6.25" x 4.5" personal card. No place, April 2, 1996. To Paul [Newman]. Pristine condition.

In full, "Dear Paul, I understand completely. Barbara and I, too, are inundated with wonderful opportunities to be honored. Perhaps you have found the true cure to 'honorrhea.' In any event, I appreciated your note very much."

Paul Newman had evidently declined an invitation to be honored at an event, possibly recommended by the former President.

On December 6, 1992, introducing the 1992 Kennedy Center Honorees in the East Room of The White House, President Bush warmly introduced each honoree, including Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, saying, "They have shown a generous spirit as well as talent."

Provenance: From a tag sale enthusiast in Westport, CT , where the Newmans lived for many years, and Joanne still resides. Found in a book on the Presidents, along with a Bill Clinton letter. The letter here offered was part of a collection of letters to Paul Newman.
