Description:

Gershwin George

George Gershwin and Richard Rodgers: signatures of two legendary songwriters!

Signatures of George Gershwin (1898-1937) and Richard Rodgers (1902-1979), two prolific composers of Broadway's Golden Age.

4" x 3" paper slip pencil signed by Gershwin as "George Gershwin" and also dated in his hand "Mar. 1929." The slip is attached to a wider card.  In very good condition, with some isolated red pencil smudges, one just touching the "G" of signature.

3-hole punched autograph album leaf signed by Rodgers as "To Joe, Richard Rodgers." Annotated by collector along bottom edge: "Richard Rodgers - Songwriter - 7/4/38." In near fine condition.

Gershwin's signature dates from one of his most productive song writing periods, just after An American in Paris (1928) and during that year's Show Girl. During the remainder of his short career, Gershwin composed classical, musical, and “folk opera” oeuvres, including Porgy and Bess (1935).

Rodgers's signature dates from the production period of I'd Rather Be Right, a musical satirizing contemporary American politics. In this collaboration between Rodgers, Lorenz Hart, George S. Kaufman, and Moss Hart, George M. Cohan starred as a thinly disguised caricature of then sitting President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Rodgers later partnered with Oscar Hammerstein to produce Oklahoma (1943), Carousel (1945), South Pacific (1949), The King and I (1951), and The Sound of Music (1959).
