Description:

Meade George

George G. Meade War Dated ALS

1p autograph letter inscribed overall by Civil War commander George G. Meade (1815-1872), and signed by him with rank as "Geo. G. Meade, Maj. Genl. U.S.A., Comdr A.P." at lower right. Written at the Headquarters of the Army of the Potomac on January 17, 1865. On laid cream stationery with pre-printed "Head-Quarters, Army of the Potomac, ---186-" letterhead. Expected light paper folds. A tiny piece of tape along the left edge is well outside of any text. Minor mounting traces verso, else near fine. 5" x 8".

Major General Meade wrote in part:

"Mrs. Meade has forwarded to me your letter of the 13th inst, asking for my autograph; which I take pleasure in complying with, in the present letter."

Meade's autograph seeker "Mr. W.H. Davis" of Doylestown, Pennsylvania may have been William Watts Hart Davis (1820-1910). Davis served as the commander of the 104th Pennsylvania Regiment during the Civil War, and he was even affiliated with the Army of the Potomac at one time. Davis was invalided out of the war after a shrapnel injury, which could explain the civilian honorific appearing here instead of a military one.

George G. Meade, nicknamed "Old Snapping Turtle" because of his notoriously short temper, was a career military officer. The veteran of the Second Seminole and Mexican-American Wars enjoyed tremendous success as a division and corps commander at the pivotal Battles of Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville. Meade was promoted to command the Army of the Potomac just three days before the Battle of Gettysburg. Meade successfully defeated Confederate General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia by the end of the 3-day battle, crushing Confederate dreams of a Northern invasion.
