Description:

Dewey George

A block of wood, 3.75" x .75" x .75", bearing a printed label affixed to one side which reads: "This Wood is Cut from Spar of the Spanish War Ship [Don] Antonio de Ulloa WHICH WAS SUNK BY DEWEY IN THE BATTLE OF MANILA B[AY] MAY 1ST, 1898." The lower left of the label notes that the wood is presented with the "Compliments of AMASA LYON, Umbrella Maker, 814 Broadway, New York." Some chipping to label resulting in the loss of a few letters in text, else very good condition.

The Don Antonio de Ulloa was an Velasco-class cruiser launched in 1887. Soon after her completion in 1897, the ship was sent to the Pacific and she saw action against Philippine insurgents during the Tagalog Revolt of 1896-1897. In 1898, the ship's machinery had deteriorated to such a point that the she was removed from service to be overhauled. Anchored off Cavite in Manila Bay, many of her guns were removed to reinforce the shore batteries, leaving only a few guns on her starboard side. During the Battle of Manila Bay on May 1, 1898, the Ulloa (essentially a shore battery now) came under heavy fire from Dewey's fleet during it's first pass killing or disabling most of the skeleton crew which had been left aboard. Unable to strike her colors due to lack of manpower, Dewey's fleet, assuming that the ship was still actively engaged, fired on her again during their next pass, sinking it in shallow water.
