George Custer's Killer, Spotted Rabbit - Rare Photograph
Photograph

A very rare photograph showing a group of Native Americans and soldiers, including Custer's reputed killer, Spotted Rabbit. It measures 6" x 4" sepia. Detailed pencil notations on verso along with a date stamp reading "March 24? [year illegible]." Overall, very good condition.

The note on verso reads, in full: "L to R / Wash Leedom, a member of the old 7th cavalry, who fought in the Black Hills; a Sioux chieftain; the granddaughter of Sitting Bull; Spotted Rabbit, who, Capt. Jim Moore says, killed Custer; Capt. Jim Moore."

Spotted Rabbit was the nephew of White Buffalo, and among those who advanced nearest Custer's final position at Little Big Horn - making him a terrific candidate for the honor of being "Long Hair's" killer. But the true identity of Custer's killer has frustrated historians for decades, with many coming forward to claim the position. Perhaps in this historic photograph, answers may begin to be found!

The "Jim Moore" in this photograph likely refers to James E. Moore (1849-1891) who served as a private in Company "D", 7th U.S. Cavalry during the Civil War. He later was present at Little Big Horn and served as a farrier for the 7th; during the battle he was positioned with a pack train and engaged in a hill-top fight.

The "Wash Leedom" in our photograph, however, does not appear to be connected with the 7th Cavalry -- although a misspelling of his name may be responsible. Further research warranted.
