Description:

Custer George

Bold signature of George Armstrong Custer (1839-1876) on paper slip measuring 6.25" x 2.5". Signed and inscribed "Genl GA Custer / Fort Leavenworth Kas.". Certified NM 7. PSA/DNA slab measures 9.5" x 4.5".

This signature likely dates from circa October 1867 to August 1868, when Custer was under military arrest at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. In July 1867, Custer had left Fort Wallace without permission to secure supplies for Kansas' westernmost bastion then under Indian attack. (There is also evidence that he had just wanted to see his wife Elizabeth Bacon Custer, who was further east.) The disgraced Lieutenant Colonel had been suspended without pay for one year following his October 1867 court martial. Custer's commanding officer Major General Philip A. Sheridan (1831-1888) gave Custer his rooms at Fort Leavenworth for use during his incarceration.

George Armstrong Custer had a distinguished Civil War record serving with the Michigan Brigade. After the war, the intrepid cavalryman scouted in Texas, Kansas, Colorado, and other Indian Territory in the American West. He was killed at the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876.
