George Clinton Introduces a Naval Colonel & Inventor of a Military Vessel to Guard New York's Harbor
ALS
A fine autograph letter signed as Vice President, one page, 7.75 x 9.75 in., Washington, D.C., March 4, 1808. Clinton writes a letter to Naval Officer Samuel Osgood on integral address letterhead, introducing a Colonel who invented a military vessel. Expected seal tear from opening, mailing folds, otherwise near fine.

He writes, in part: "…This will be delivered to you by Col. [Joseph?] Hatch of your native state. He lately came to this place with a Model of a...Battery of his own Invention for the Inspection of our of Great Men (Warriors). What their Opinion of it is, or what Encouragement he has secured from them I know not as I am not in their Counsels. It is not a Gun Boat and therefore has not the strongest possible recommendation…but notwithstanding this, it appears to one as if it would constitute quite a formidable defense for our Harbour, specifically as an Auxiliary to Land Batteries. He has it in completeness to construct one…I therefore take the Liberty of recommending him to your…friendly notice. Should the Mayor still be in the City I beg you to be so obliging as to introduce Col Hatch…".

Samuel Osgood (1747-1813) was an American merchant and statesman born in Andover, Massachusetts. He served in the Massachusetts and New York State legislatures, represented Massachusetts in the Continental Congress, and was the fourth Postmaster General of the United States (the first under the current Constitution), serving during George Washington's first term. In 1803, he was appointed by President Jefferson as Naval Officer of the Port of New York, a position he held until his death.

George Clinton (1739-1812) served as the fourth vice president of the United States under Thomas Jefferson, and again under James Madison up until his death during Madison's first term. He also served as the first governor of New York between 1777 and 1795, and again between 1801 to 1804. Along with John C. Calhoun, he is the first of two vice presidents to hold office under two consecutive presidents.
