George Bernard Shaw Corrects Errors in English Edition of "Saint Joan" & Sends Manuscript for US Publication
ALS

George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950). Autograph letter signed "G. Bernard Shaw." in which the writer corrects errors in the English Edition of his play "Saint Joan" and sends the manuscript for publication in the United States. 1p, 6.75" x 4.5" on Shaw's own stationery, Welwyn, Hertfordshire, England, May 28, 1924. Letter shows faint ink ghost marks in upper left and left, single flattened mail fold, else excellent condition and beautifully signed.

George Bernard Shaw was an Irish playwright and polemicist, critic, and political activist, most known for writing works such as Pygmalion, Major Barbara, The Doctor's Dilemma, and Caesar and Cleopatra. He received critical acclaim and popular success, being awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1925. Shaw also became quite vocal in political matters, leaving a legacy of controversial and sometimes contradictory ideals.

In this letter he refers to the significant delays his editing of the English edition of "Saint Joan", which had the result of increasing demand for the work! The letter reads in full:

"Here at last is the copy for the new Saint Joan volume, corrected with infinite labor. I put you on your honor to have it faithfully and carefully printed (New York City), and not to rush it out as you did my last volume with half a dozen glaring misprints on any page. The delay here has led to such an increase in the bookseller's orders that practically the whole edition (20,000) has been "subscribed".
Faithfully & in haste
G. Bernard Shaw."
