Signed Photograph
An inscribed tin typed photograph by Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw to Nazi propagandist George Sylvester Viereck. Measuring 3.5" x 5.25", n.p., dated February 14, 1935. A bust photograph of an older Shaw, dressed in a pin-striped suit and tie. Inscribed at the upper left edge, "G. Bernard Shaw to Sylvester Viereck 14/2/35." Mounted to a thicker cardstock, with a handwritten caption, to the overall size of 5" x 7.25". With wear to the corners. Silvering throughout. Boldly signed.

George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950), known at his insistence as Bernard Shaw, was an Irish playwright, critic, polemicist and political activist. He had a strong enthusiasm for both Adolph Hitler and Lenin, believing that a dictatorship was the only viable political arrangement. When the Nazi Party came to power in Germany in January 1933, Shaw described Hitler as "a very remarkable man, a very able man".

George Sylvester Viereck (1884-1962) was a German-American poet who worked on behalf of Nazi Germany as a pro-German propagandist. He became a Germanophile after graduating from college and wrote numerous publications and lectured on his support of Germany. His staunch pro-German stance even caught the notice of Theodore Roosevelt, who wrote him a strongly-worded letter encouraging him to leave the U.S. and return to Germany.
