Description:

Custer George

George Armstrong Custer signs a 7th Cavalry Discharge for a Musician in the Regimental Band

Partially printed document signed, as a formal discharge for "Expiration of term of service" from the "Army of the United States", 7.5" x 9.5". Dated "March 4, 1875", and signed by George Armstrong Custer as "G.A. Custer". Executed on vellum with a lovely engraving of the seal of the United States depicting a bald eagle holding 13 olive branches in one talon and 13 arrows in the other. The olive branch stands for the power to make peace, while the arrows stand for the power to make war. The red colored  manuscript was contemporaneously augmented with regular ink, with the exclusion of the signature of Custer which is completely unaffected. Near fine. Presented matted with a lovely 7th Cavalry picture to a completed size of xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.

A handsome document acknowledging that Otto Kauffman had completed his five year enlistment as a Private of the Seventh Cavalry, and was released from service for "Expiration of terms of service". Under the heading of "Character," the commandant of the Regimental Band has noted that Kauffmann was an "A good soldier and an excellent musician." Interestingly, another notation on the verso records that "The soldier took part in an engagement with hostile Indians near Big Horn River, Montana Territory, August 11th, 1873." This document is especially interesting in light of Custer's affection for his regimental musicians. At Fort Lincoln, he actively encouraged musical performances as morale builders.

A wonderful important piece with a stunning presentation.
