William Tecumseh Sherman(1820-1891) served as a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. While received recognition for his outstanding command of military strategy, he was also criticized for the harsh "scorched earth" policies that he implemented in total war against the Confederate States. Sherman began his Civil War career serving in the First Battle of Bull Run and Kentucky in 1861,where he was grazed by bullets in the knee and shoulder. Known later in life for the "War Is Hell" address he delivered to the graduating class of the Michigan Military Academy, he expounded on the infamous phrase originally coined in April 11, 1880, when he addressed a crowd of more than 10,000 at Columbus, Ohio: "There is many a boy here today who looks on war as all glory, but, boys, it is all hell."
