Sherman William
Autograph Letter Signed “W.T. Sherman,” three pages, 5.5” x 9.25”, front and verso. Army Building, New York, February 1, 1888. To [Logan C.] Murray. Lightly soiled in lower right of first page. Fine condition.

In full, “I send you a full list of Men [not present] prominent in New York State furnished me in confidence, the Stars indicating preference ‾ all known to be friends of General Grant. I did intend to come down today but Mrs. Sherman arrived from Pittsburg last night ‾ completely exhausted & demands my attention. I will be down however tomorrow or next day. Could you meanwhile complete a list for the Committee in number according to the Resolution made at the 5th Ave Hotel, and prepare for publication a notice announcing their names &c ‾ I think this Committee should be asked to ‘canvas the Subject’ and to meet at the Gentlemans Parlor say two days before the anniversary of Gen. Grant to formulate the ‘Plan’ for submission to the General Meeting at the same place one year from the date of the other meeting as though that had been intended from the start. If Genl Corliss [sic, Collis] will surely be on hand I can promise if notified to come to the Bank say at 1. PM Friday. I am made use of by so many parties that I find it embarrassing ‾ General Indiference [sic] is a harder enemy to deal with than Positive opposition.”

Housed in a custom-made brown cloth covered four-flap folder, lettered in gilt on a burgundy label on the spine: “William Tecumseh Sherman A.L.S. February 1, 1888 to Murray”.

General Ulysses S. Grant was born on April 27, 1822. He had died on July 23, 1885. On April 28, 1888, the “New-York Tribune” reported, in part, “The birthday of General Grant was celebrated last night at a dinner at Delmonico’s, at which there was a large representative gathering of men of all political creeds. The large dining-room presented a novel appearance. The guests were seated at nine round tables, each with its own president, who was one of the committee of fourteen appointed some weeks ago to make the arrangements. The room was gay with flowers, and three beautiful oil portraits of General Grant hung on the walls, draped in the Stars and Stripes. General W.T. Sherman, chairman of the committee, presided over the whole dinner and did the honors of the first table, below the central portraits. At that table there was a vacant chair, wreathed with evergreens. Roscoe Conkling’s place would have been there [former Sen. Conkling of New York had died on April 18th]…” The names of the men who “presided over the other tables” are then listed, including “General Charles H.T. Collis (secretary of the committee) … Logan C. Murray.”

In 1874, New York banker Logan C. Murray met with seven other bankers and organized the American Bankers Association. He was President of the A.B.A. when General Sherman wrote this letter.
