Glue and mounting residue on the verso. Overall very good.

Philip Henry Sheridan (1831-1888) was a career U.S. Army officer known as "Fightin' Phil" due to his aggressive tactics during the American Civil War. He was a middling West Point cadet with a short temper and a bad attitude, once suspended for threatening a classmate with a bayonet. Sheridan began his thirty-year-long military career as a low-ranking officer in the antebellum Pacific Northwest, gaining experience fighting local Indians. Sheridan was quickly promoted during the first years of the Civil War, after distinguishing himself at Perryville, Stones River, and other battles. Fellow Union Army officer and future 18th U.S. President U.S. Grant (1822-1885) promoted Sheridan to command forces in the Armies of the Potomac and Shenandoah. Sheridan only increased his reputation for ferocity by war's end following his destruction of the Shenandoah Valley in 1864, called "The Burning" by its residents. After the Civil War, Sheridan fought in the Indian Wars. He was promoted one last time, to the rank of General in the Regular Army, just two months before his death in June 1888.
