Eisenhower Dwight 1890 - 1969 As the war draws to a close, five-star General of the Army Dwight D. Eisenhower censors his own letter to his wife Mamie

Envelope, 8.25" x 3.75", signed "Dwight D. Eisenhower" in left portion between typed "Censored by:" and "General of the Army, U.S. Army," back flap imprinted "Headquarters / U.S. Forces, European Theater / Office of the Commanding General." Addressed to "Mrs. Dwight D. Eisenhower / Wardman Park Hotel / Apartment 208-H / Washington, D.C." Neatly slit open at top. No postal markings. Fine condition.

Throughout the war years, Mrs. Dwight D. Eisenhower lived in Washington at the Wardman Park Hotel. On January 16, 1944, Gen. Eisenhower arrived in London and assumed command of the European Theater as Commanding General, U.S. Forces, European Theater of Operations. Gen. Eisenhower was promoted to five-star General of the Army on December 20, 1944. On June 27, 1945, the European Theater of Operations of the U.S. Army was redesignated U.S. Forces, European Theater. Eisenhower remained as Commanding General.
