Description:

Lyon Nathaniel

Sepia toned carte de visite of Brigadier General Nathaniel Lyon (1818-1861), published by D. Appleton & Company, and photographed by Austin Augustus Turner (1831-1866). The oblong albumen print photo shows Lyon in Union regalia, including plumed hat, epaulettes, and saber. A fluted column partly draped with a tasseled curtain and a geometric patterned rug comprise the studio backdrop. Labeled “Cartes de Visite, D. Appleton & Co., 443 & 445 B’way, New York, A.A. Turner Photographer” verso. Also twice pencil inscribed “Gen. Lyon” verso. In very good to near fine condition with light toning and a few discolored spots verso, measuring 2.375" x 4".

Nathaniel Lyon had the distinction of being the first Union Army General killed in battle during the Civil War. The Military Academy graduate and career soldier fought in the Seminole, Mexican, and Indian Wars. At the cusp of the Civil War, Lyon was appointed commander of a federal arsenal in Missouri, a state with divided political loyalties and a pro-Confederate governor. Lyon died leading Union troops against Missouri militiamen and Confederate troops in the Battle of Wilson’s Creek in August 1861.

New York-based firm D. Appleton & Company published this carte de visite based on a photograph taken of him sometime before the photographer A.A. Turner’s death in 1866. It was likely circulated after 1861 to commemorate the first slain Union General.
