Custer George 1839 - 1876 General G.A. Custer bold signature in addressed envelope to his wife

Buff colored envelope affixed with single rose red 3 cent stamp postmarked with target cancel. Boldly addressed by George Custer to his wife as "Mrs. Genl. GA Custer / Monroe Mich" in black ink. Inscribed with various sets of pencil postal markings including October 1868 docketing.In very good condition, measuring 5.125" x 3".

George Armstrong Custer (1839-1876) inscribed this envelope to his wife Elizabeth Bacon Custer (1842-1933). In 1868, Custer already had a distinguished war record serving with the Michigan Brigade. After the Civil War, Custer served in Texas and the American West. Custer had been placed under military arrest after he abandoned his post without leave to see his wife two months before penning this envelope, and he rejoined his regiment about two weeks before this envelope was posted. A mere month later, Custer participated in the Battle of Washita River against the Cheyenne.

Accompanied by Philatelic Foundation signed and embossed certificate of authenticity, serial number F 249454.
