Description:

Burnside Ambrose

Ambrose Burnside was the Union Civil War General who engineered the successful taking of the North Carolina coast, but failed at Fredericksburg. (He had warned Lincoln that he was unqualified for high command).) Burnside's Bridge at Antietam is named for him, as are 'sideburns'. After the war he became Governor of Rhode Island.

Single page autographed letter signed, 7.5" x 4.5". Signed by General Ambrose Burnside with a large 3" signature "A.E. Burnside" and dated "Jan'y 15, /74". Light glue marking to verso, else near fine.

Burnside opposed Morrison Waite's appointment as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court by U.S. Grant. Waite, however, was finally approved in spite of this letter only 6 days later and took office in March of 1874. Some political deal must have taken place enabling another vote. Letter reads:

"Remember that a letter written more than 12 years ago by an eminent jurist expressing disloyal sentiments when the Government needed his best efforts to sustain its authority has this day prevented his confirmation by the U.S. Senate as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States.

A.E. Burnside

Providence, Jan'y 15, '74".
