Description:

Ulysses Grant
New York, NY, April 27, 1897
Gen. Grant's Tomb Archive: Invitation, Menu & Souvenir Badges!
Archive

An archive of souvenir ephemera created in honor of the formal dedication of Grant's Tomb, held on April 27, 1897. Totaling six items in all, including an official invitation, menu, souvenir map, and pair of commemorative medals. Exhibits varying degrees of age toning, soiling, and handling creases throughout. Light rubbing and discoloration to medals, otherwise near fine. Please see below for additional information on contents.

The lot includes:

1.) Engraved invitation to the formal transfer of the Tomb of General Grant, to be held at Riverside Park on April 27, 1897. Featuring a gold embossed seal of the tomb's façade at center margin. 8" x 11.75".

2.) Official menu served at U.S. Grant's birthday, held in conjunction with the monument's dedication. 9.75" x 8".

3.) Two souvenir medals produced in honor of the dedication. The first shows Grant's profile in relief while the second bears the monument's façade. Together with a red, white, and blue patriotic ribbon. Each measures 1.5" x 2.5".

4.) Ticket diagram for Grant's Tomb, also showing the route of the procession. 7.75" x 11".

Upon Grant's death in July 1885, his widow Julia indicated his wish to be interred in New York. Within days, a site in Riverside Park was selected, and the Grant Monument Association (GMA) was established to appeal for funds. After a series of setbacks, the official groundbreaking ceremony was hosted in April 1891, with its construction completed on what would have been Grant's 75th birthday, April 27, 1897. Even before its completion, the Grand Army of the Republic hosted annual ceremonies at the tomb in honor of the former President's birthday and Memorial Day until 1929.
