Description:

Garfield James 1831 - 1881 Garfield's signed copy of Stewart's "Philosophy of the Human Mind" used by him in his last term at Williams College - President Garfield was on his way to his 25th Williams College Class Reunion when he was assassinated at a Washington railway station in 1881.

The first Presidential memorial library, completed at the Lawnfield estate in Ohio by the widow of James Garfield four years after his assassination, houses almost 3,000 books that were used and treasured by the 20th president. Books were a scarce commodity to young James, who lost his father before the age of two, and was raised by his mother who struggled to maintain a humble existence. Both James Garfield and his wife Lucretia were voracious readers and amassed a large collection of books. Some twenty years ago, several dozen of his books were de-accessioned, and one of these books is described below:

Book "Elements of the Philosophy of the Human Mind" in two parts, by Dugald Stewart. London: William Tegg & Co., 1856. Impressed ornate design on covers. Gilt lettering on spine: "Stewart's / Philosophy / of the / Human / Mind." Endpapers list "Standard Works in Theology, Biblical Criticism, &c." Affixed inside the front cover, is a 2.75" x 1.5" label imprinted "Inter Folia Fructus / Library of / James A. Garfield." Boards and spine professionally restored to good condition.

Housed in a custom blue-cloth covered clamshell case with "Philosophy / of the / Human Mind / Dugald / Stewart" stamped in gilt on a red leather label at the top of the spine and, on lower portion, also in gilt, "James Garfield's / Signed Copy / 1856."

Signed on the first flyleaf "James A. Garfield / Williams College / May 1856." Lightly penned with adequate contrast. Garfield entered Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts, on July 11, 1854. He graduated with the highest honors on August 6, 1856. President Garfield was on his way to his Williams College Class of 1856 25th reunion when he was shot at Washington's Baltimore & Potomac Railroad station on July 2, 1881.
