Description:

Two weeks before independence, the future Chief Justice orders œ580 to be paid to Capt. John Dixon as Paymaster of a company he was raising to reinforce General George Washington's troops in New York.

Autograph Document Signed "O Ellsworth" and also "Ezl Williams" as Members of the Committee of the Pay Table, 1p, 8" x 5.75". Hartford, June 19, 1776. To John Lawrence, Treasurer of the Colony of Connecticut. On watermarked laid paper. Fine condition.

In full, "Pay Capt. John Dixon, as Paymaster of his own Company now to be raised _ five Hundred & Eighty pounds _ pr hand Mr. Jno. Gording Jnr. & charge the Colony. Hartford June 19th 1776. œ580." Docketed on verso by Ellsworth: "Order / Mr. Jno. Dixon / œ580 / May 28 1778." Also on verso: "Audited Sept 1, 1777 . J Treadwell" and manuscript "Recd 20 June 1776 Five Hundred & Eighty pounds being the Contents of Tr. Lawrence" signed "John Gordon Junr."

John Dixon was Captain of the Third Company in General James Wadsworth's Brigade which was raised to reinforce General George Washington's troops in New York.

Ezekiel Williams (1729-1818) was a successful Wethersfield, Connecticut merchant who served throughout the war as Commissary of Prisoners held in Connecticut. He was a member of the Committee of the Pay Table for Connecticut from 1775 and sheriff of Hartford County from 1767 to 1789. William Robinson was a Representative from Plainfield in the Connecticut House of Representatives. John Treadwell (1745-1823) later served as Governor of Connecticut (1809-1811).
