The nineteenth-century provenance states: "Autographs of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, Lord Lyons, the Duke of Newcastle, the Earl of St. Germans, and others of the Prince's suite, on his visit to the U.S. Written at Philadelphia for this book. The first is that of King Edward VII, when Prince of Wales." An inscription found on the reverse of this paper slip reads: "Given to M.A. Stevens May 1912."

The prince's suite was comprised of ministers, support staff, his "governor" or guardian, the royal physician, and some of his young male friends. As one ca. 1861 travel account stated, "The noblemen and gentlemen appointed to the suite, were the Duke of Newcastle, Secretary of State for the Colonies; Earl St. Germans, Lord Steward of the Household; Hon. General Bruce; Col. Teesdale, R.A.; and Captain Grey, Grenadier Guards. Equerries to the Prince, Dr. Acland, and Mr. Engleheart, Secretary to the Duke. Besides these official personages, a Son of Lord St. Germans, and another college friend of the Prince, accompanied the Royal party throughout the tour."

The 18-year-old Prince of Wales conducted a four-month-long tour of Canada and the United States in the summer and fall of 1860. He visited Montreal, Ottawa, Niagara Falls, Detroit, Chicago, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, Washington, D.C., Mt. Vernon, Richmond, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York, Albany, Boston, and Portland, where he was universally mobbed with crowds, dined, and feted. The trip was a huge public relations success for the young prince.
