On cream stationery with "Sandringham, Norfolk" letterhead, and a crowned and plumed Prince of Wales cypher embossed in black at upper left. In near fine condition, with expected paper folds. The envelope postmarked from King's Lynn bears a purple one penny Victoria stamp. Letter opened at left, else in very good to near fine condition.

In part: "Many thanks for your kind letter -- 'Patience is a virtue' + I am quite ready…Yesterday we had a regular thaw but it froze again last night + we have been for a skate again (which has been our principle occupation for three weeks!) with perfect safety."

The Prince of Wales wrote this note to Emily Charlotte De Burgh Canning Boyle, Countess of Cork and Orrery (1828-1912). The Countess married Richard Edmund St. Lawrence Boyle, 9th Earl of Cork and Orrery (1829-1904), whose ancestral seat was located in southwestern Ireland. She later wrote and published a history of her husband's family called The Orrery Papers in 1903.

Located in southeastern England, Sandringham Estate was the retreat of the Prince and Princess of Wales after 1862, when the young prince purchased the 8,000 acre estate and Georgian mansion. The home was extensively redesigned between 1870-1900 and resulted in a Jacobean Revival showcase of red brick front facades, dramatic gables, and green-domed turrets. Princess Alexandra of Denmark decorated the interior, and the Prince of Wales included a billiard room and indoor bowling alley. As we know from this letter, ice skating, as well as shooting, horseback riding, and horse stud farming, were just a few of the sports offered at the estate.

Sandringham provided a refuge for the younger generation of British aristocrats fleeing the stuffiness of Victoria's court. Collectively, the royal couple and their weekend visitors became known as the "Sandringham Set." Beautiful, talented, wealthy, and witty, these nobles with loose morals and a zest for life determined style and fashion in late Victorian England.
