Autograph Document Signed "O Ellsworth" as a Member of the Committee of the Pay Table, 1p, 7.25" x 5.5". Hartford, May 28, 1778. To John Lawrence, Treasurer of the State of Connecticut. On watermarked laid paper. Fine condition.

In full, "Pay the Select Men of Plainfield fourty Eight Shillings for a Blanket - & charge the State - Hartford May 28 1778 ... ‘£2.8" Docketed on verso by Ellsworth: "Order / Select Men of / Plainfield / ‘£2.8 / May 28 1778." Also on verso: "Audited Decr 21, 1778 / E Williams" and manuscript "Recd the Contents" signed "Wm Robinson." 48 shillings = 2 pounds 8 shillings.

The Board of Selectmen was the executive branch in the open town meeting form of government. Connecticut had promised a Blanket from the State every year for each non-commissioned Officer & Soldier.

Ezekiel Williams (1729-1818) was a successful Wethersfield, Connecticut merchant who served throughout the war as Commissary of Prisoners held in Connecticut. He was a member of the Committee of the Pay Table for Connecticut from 1775 and sheriff of Hartford County from 1767 to 1789. William Robinson was a Representative from Plainfield in the Connecticut House of Representatives.
