Jacques-Louis David ANS: "We have had excellent luck with the [illegible] item, which has just been received from France…We are pleased therefore to enclose this rarity…"

Jacques Laffitte DS: "The functions the King's trust has called me to endorse regretfully force me to renounce my bank, which will continue to exist for the sole purpose of its liquidation. One of my partners, Mr. Baignéres, has died, and the other, Mr. Thomas-Phillips, wants to retire…Until more favorable circumstances allow for the re-creation of an Institution linked to some honorable memories, my nephew will open a House so as not to discontinue relations that I would be happy to be able to pursue with my former friends…It pains me to leave a career to which I thought I had devoted my whole life…"

Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825) was a French painter who later became an active supporter of the French Revolution and a friend of Maximilien Robespierre. Due to this close relationship, he effectively became a dictator of the arts under the French Republic and helped to destroy the old order. Despite having many opportunities open to him under the King, David was a regicide who voted in favor of the execution of Louis XVI. Jacques Laffitte (1767-1844) was a leading French banker and governor of the Bank of France from 1814 to 1820. He aided in the development of new banking techniques during the early stages of industrialization in France and played a decisive role during the Revolution of 1830 that brought Louis-Philippe, the Duc d'Orléans, to the French throne, ousting the unpopular Charles X.
