Grant writes to C.D. Chapman of Washington, D.C., who wished to obtain information about his father, Ulysses S. Grant. In full:

"In reply to your letter of Nov, 21st, which absence has prevented my answering sooner, I write to say that my father moved about so often from one house to another that there was no particular house which could be designated as his family homestead. I have heard him say that he had lived longer in the White House - during his two terms in office as President - than in any other one of his homes.

I have no pictures of his homes which I can send you - all having been loaned at various times for articles written. My father was born at Point Pleasant, Ohio, and during his childhood went to Georgetown, Ohio. From then he went West Point, after his graduation he was stationed at Jefferson Barracks & from there he went to the Mexican war. After the war he was stationed at Ft. Brady, Michigan, then at Ft. Wayne, Detroit, then Sackets Harbor, N.Y. then California. In 1854 he resigned & lived in St. Louis and in 1859 went to Galena. From Galena he entered the army for the Civil War - after that his life is well known. He owned a handsome house in New York - No. 3 East 66th St - at the time of his death. Regretting not to be able to furnish you with the material you wish..."
