Frederic Remington signed E.W. Kemble illustration autographed by New Rochelle Artist Colonists

Original pen and ink illustration on board signed by Frederic Remington and 11 other members of the New Rochelle Arts Colony verso. The illustration, entitled "An up-to-date Book reviewer," is attributed to cosigner E.W. Kemble, and depicts a bespectacled man reading two books while writing a book review with his right foot! Frederic Remington's signature as "Frederic Remington" appears in the first column seventh from the top. Two modern pencil inscriptions at top. Overall light toning and scattered minor discoloration not affecting signatures. The gilt-edged board measures 7" x 5".

The illustration is signed verso by 12 individuals including artist Frederic Remington (1861-1909); illustrator E.W. Kemble (1861-1933); playwright Augustus Thomas (1857-1934); vaudeville actor Dewolf Hopper (1858-1935); playwright Jerome A. Hart; newspaper editor Henry Loomis Nelson (1846-1908); and orator R.G. Ingersoll (1833-1899). The other 6 signees have not been identified.

Remington and Kemble were both members of the New Rochelle Artist Colony which flourished during the first decades of the twentieth century. "Greenwich Village without the Greenwich," as the Westchester County hub was called, attracted artists, writers, and dancers. There, Remington joined other celebrated illustrators Howard Chandler Christy, Charles Dana Gibson, Frederick Opper, and Norman Rockwell. By 1920, New Rochelle boasted the greatest number of artists per capita of almost any U.S. city, so densely populated was its artists' colony.  Remington worked at Endion, his Gothic Revival cottage.

Frederic Remington is best remembered for his Western scenes. As a newspaper artist-correspondent touring the American Southwest and Canada, Remington observed firsthand the Plains Indians, cow hands, bronco-busters, cavalry officers, and Indian-fighters that he later drew and painted. Remington added three-dimensional sculpture to his repertoire during his later career.
