Description:

Bartholdi Frederic 1834 - 1904 Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi raises money for Statue of Liberty.

Archive comprised of three calling cards from individuals involved in fundraising for the Statue of Liberty, including Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904), Achille de Rochambeau (1836-1897), and Count Serurier. All cards are in near fine condition, the largest measuring 3.75" x 2.25". Two cards with minor surface roughness verso appear to have been formerly pasted into scrapbooks; one has tiny tear to lower right corner.

The first is a Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi calling card printed "Aug te Bartholdi" in cursive at center and giving the sculptor's 40, rue Vavin address. Bartholdi handwrote on the card: "The C te de Paris has underwritten 5000 fr.! Regards from Madame to Madame. I cordially shake your hand, B." Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904) studied painting, sculpture, and architecture under well-known instructors like Viollet-le-Duc in Paris. Following his service in the Franco-Prussian War, Bartholdi became increasingly interested in sculpting monumental works celebrating resistance against oppression, and Enlightenment ideals like Freedom. Bartholdi later conceived of the design of the "Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World". The fundraising phase of this process would take years, and indeed long surpass the actual 100 th anniversary of the United States.

The second card is printed with the Marquis de Rochambeau's title as "President of the Admission and Installation Committees of Class 17 and member of the 8 th Historical Section of the 1878 Universal Exposition", and handwritten: "Hurrah! His Highness sent his subscription to Count Serurier: 5000 f. Five thousand fr." Eugene Achille Lacroix de Vimeur, Marquis de Rochambeau (1836-1897) was a well-respected French historian and archeologist. Along with Count Serurier (whose unsigned calling card makes the third of this archive), Rochambeau was an honorary member of the Franco-American Union, the group responsible for Statue of Liberty fundraising.

The "C te de Paris" and "His Highness" refer to Prince Phillipe of Orleans, Comte de Paris (1838-1894). This grandson of ousted King Louis-Phillipe served with distinction in the American Civil War before returning to Europe. In his 1889 biography of the Comte de Paris, author Marquis de Flers includes the following letter dated March 21, 1878: "My dear Count [Serurier] - I beg that you will put my name down on your list as a subscriber to the amount of 5,000 francs. I am happy to be able to associate myself with this great national work, which will remind America of the glorious 4 th of July, 1776, and will unite both nations in the bonds of the same great memory ... " Our calling cards document the communication of this great news to core Franco-American Club members.
