Franklin Roosevelt and the Birth of Warm Springs, Signed and Endorsed!

Two page typed budget proposal for Georgia Warm Springs Foundation, with an autographed and signed endorsement by Franklin Roosevelt along the bottom of the first page. 8.5" x 10.75". Affixed by two grommets to a pale blue sheet with the address of his Law office, Roosevelt & O'Connor, 120 Broadway, New York. Dated '5/1/29", and boldly signed and endorsed by Franklin Roosevelt as "FDR" using strong contrasting ink. Blue sheet has slight chipping to right edge.

In 1921, FDR, at the age of 39, contracted Polio during a family vacation. Once he was strong enough to get about, and had been fitted with braces, he traveled by car from 65th Street to his law offices at 120 Broadway, using crutches to move about. By 1923 in an attempt to continue to seek any treatment possible, Franklin Roosevelt had heard of the history of Warm Springs, Georgia, including a story of a young polio victim’s recovery after bathing in the swimming pools at Warm Springs. Roosevelt arrived at the resort on October 3, 1924 hoping to find a cure. The next day, he began swimming and immediately felt an improvement. For the first time in three years, he was able to move his right leg.  Because Roosevelt was nationally prominent, his visit assured publicity for Warm Springs. A syndicated Sunday newspaper supplement featured his experience. By his return in 1925, other patients were coming in the hope of a cure.  In 1926, Roosevelt bought the resort property and 1,200 acres from George Peabody for some $200,000.  Seeking medical advice and contributions from his friends, he organized the nonprofit Warms Springs Foundation in 1927 turning property over to the foundation.

This financial budget for the development of the property shows the overall budgeted cost for purchase and development of the property to be $1.5 million, breaking down the costs into five categories:

  1. To complete purchase of present property and free Foundation from indebtedness
  2. To build and equip new accommodations for patients i.e. new unites, cottages, dining halls, etc
  3. To establish Patient's Aid Fund
  4. To establish Fund for study of Restorative Treatment
  5. To establish Maintenance Fund

To which Roosevelt added his comment along the bottom of the page of "O.K. Except--eliminate Fund for study of Restorative Treatment $250,000---and add proviso that $100,000 may be taken from Patients Aid Fund or Maintenance Fund to add to building."

A superb important Roosevelt signed document showing the birth of his incredible foundation!

Roosevelt ultimately would make 41 visits to Warm Springs, many of which occurred after he became governor of New York in 1928 and president for four terms beginning in 1932. The spring water provided relief and improved his polio weakened muscles. Roosevelt's mission to not only provide rehabilitation and relief from the devastation of Polio but embarked on a mission to seek out a cure for Polio and established the March of Dimes.
