Franklin Roosevelt Signs Two Presentation Copies to His White House Doctor, from the Presidential Cruise of 1938 to the Galapagos Islands

This item was featured in a catalogue issued by Glenn Horowitz Bookseller Inc, in 1996. Included with this book will be a copy of the Front cover of the Catalogue, and a copy of their book description.

Two presentation pamphlets, each signed and inscribed "Ross McIntire/from FDR", documenting the specimen collection during FDR’s Third Presidential Cruise on the USS Houston, from the July 14 to August 9, 1938, while at the Galapagos Islands (FDR was the first U.S. President to visit them). Each pamphlet 6.5" x 9.5". This set was presented to the White House physician Admiral Ross McIntire. The significance of the relationship between a President and his personal physician cannot be overstated, especially in the case of FDR who had numerous health problems in addition to being a recovered polio victim. FDR's era was such that Presidential health was kept under wraps, and FDR's health had to have been purposefully portrayed by both the physician and media as vibrant (including the purposeful lack of photographs depicting FDR on crutches or even near his crutches). The physician was granted perhaps the most private and personal access to a President bar none (after all not many get to see a President in his underwear …), and as such the relationship of trust between a President and his physician was paramount. There have been documented examples of some Presidents whose physicians were even known to prescribe pharmaceuticals to deal with their stress, or depression, or anxiety or even to maintain alertness for them to cope with their jobs. Presidential health translated to the appearance of the health of the nation.

As such the association offered here with this signed and dedicated set is extraordinary, and is accompanied by great provenance. Housed in a lovely folding red cloth case with gilt titles to the spine.

A highly desirable copy with a very personal and significant association and a superb chain of custody:
