Franklin Roosevelt's death notice by his Harvard class of 1904

Single page document, 8.5" x 11", on letterhead of "Harvard Class of 1904". Expected folds, else near fine

A thought provoking and reflective notice issued by the Harvard Class of 1904 in recognition and acknowledgement of the passing of their "distinguished classmate, Franklin Delano Roosevelt". Dated "April 16, 1945"

This warm letter distributed by the Harvard Class to its living members from the class of 1904, acknowledges the many attributes and contributions by Franklin Roosevelt "...as a man, a classmate, a politician and a public servant". The letter addressed to the class of 1904 demonstrates the grace and holistic appreciation of Roosevelt, including noting their vote to extend a donation of $502 from the class fund, from the 502 living members, to the Warm Springs Foundation "which was close to our classmate's heart"

What stands out in this 'notice' is the fondness the classmates had for Roosevelt, as shown in part:

"…But rather than record the countless honors that were conferred upon him, or the burdens that he carried so courageously, we his Harvard classmates, desire to express our admiration for his simplicity and charm; for those characteristics that generated so naturally the idea of the reception of his classmates at the White House; for those qualities manifested in his love of the sea and of sailing and fishing; for his warm humanity, his abounding faith and his Christian fortitude … We mourn the loss of a friend with whom for forty-five years, we have been in close association as fellow members of the Class of 1904."

"Voted: To approve the action of the Class Officers

(a) in sending, with the most affectionate sympathy of the Class, red roses to Mrs Roosevelt at Hyde Park;

(b) in sending to the Warm Springs Foundation, which was so close to our classmate's heart, the sum of $502, from the Class Fund representing a gift from the 502 living members of the Class …"

A fantastic example from his Harvard classmates. Roosevelt served as a member of the Board of Overseers of Harvard College from 1918 to 1924.
