Description:

Roosevelt Franklin 1882 - 1945 Franklin Roosevelt boldly signed memorandum for his early Polio Foundation, signed in his first year as Governor of New York

Single page DS memorandum on thin paper stock, 8.5" x 11". Dated via his joint business inked stamp, "Roosevelt & O'Connor/120 Broadway, N.Y.", and dated "June 5, 1928" Boldly signed by Roosevelt in black ink as "F. D. Roosevelt". Two hole punches to left margin, small pencil mark to lower margin with pencil notes along top edge. Expected folds, else near fine.

A wonderful early Roosevelt DS, while as Governor of New York. The memorandum makes an important reference of "Please credit these to the Georgia Warm Springs Foundation". In 1927 Basil O'Conner, a successful corporate lawyer, helped FDR buy Georgia Warm Springs and set up Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation, where Roosevelt indulged in its warm springs during his earlier rehabilitation from Polio. The two became life long friends. Later, during Roosevelt's presidency, Basil further assisted FDR in establishing the historic National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis - known popularly as the March of Dimes and became the leading light of the foundation for over three decades with his immediate task in 1938 to build an organization that could quickly respond to polio epidemics anywhere in the nation. This was the very foundation which came to fund Salk's infamous research, ultimately achieving worldwide recognition with the vaccine for polio in 1955.

A wonderful early signed Roosevelt memorandum with an important reference to the first step to stop Polio.
