Franklin Roosevelt Annotated Mark Twain Statement On White House Letterhead . " … I shall have no fear for the future of America .."

This item was featured in a catalogue issued by Glenn Horowitz Bookseller Inc, in 1996 and was priced $15,000. Included with this book will be a copy of the Front cover of the Catalogue, a copy of their book description and their price list.

 

Franklin Roosevelt Typed and Annotated statement about the future of America and Mark Twain, on White House bi-fold stationary, 7" x 9". Unsigned. Dated "February 13, 1935". Annotated by Roosevelt with 13 words, in addition to other marked corrections by him.  Typed to the first page, balance of pages blank and the bi-fold has been adhered to the second blank page along the top and bottom edge. Housed in a custom cloth slip case of grey cloth and a brown leather quarter spine with raised bands and gilt titles. Included is significant back up information as photocopies of letters regarding this statement, including one from the Department of State dated "February 12, 1935" responding to a request for the President to send a brief tribute to the Mark Twain Centennial Celebration. He mentioned he enclosed a draft letter for the President's signature with this being the original described.

 

Roosevelt's letter is shown in part below:

 

"… I shall have no fear for the future of America so long as we are able to laugh at ourselves as we learned to do with Mark Twain; he was the embodiment of that sense of humor without which the essential qualities of American nature could  not have (survived). Mark Twain did not bring humor to the American people; he brought it out …"

Applicable shipping and handling charges will be added to the invoice. All items will ship with signature required, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice, unless you inform us otherwise, immediately upon your receipt of invoice***

Third Party Shipping Option: If a third party shipper is preferred, the buyer is responsible for contacting them directly to make shipping arrangements. For your convenience, we have provided some recommended shippers. For your protection, we will require a signed release from you, confirming your authorization for us to release your lots to your specified third party. At that point, our responsibility and insurance coverage for your item(s) ceases. Items picked up by third party shippers are required to pay Connecticut sales tax. Items requiring third party shipping due to being oversized, fragile or bulky will be denoted in the item description.

After payment has been made in full, University Archives will ship your purchase within 5 business days following receipt of full payment for item.Packages shipped internationally will have full value declared on shipping form.
