Franklin Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson on board the  S.S. George Washington for the Peace Conference Voyage, with copies of "The Hatchet" Newspapers and Photographs.

 

Set of "The Hatchet" newspapers printed on board the U.S.S. George Washington July 1918- July 1919, of the Atlantic Crossings of President Woodrow Wilson. The U.S.S. George Washington sailed with her first load of troops 4 December 1917 and during the next 2 years made 18 round trip voyages in support of the American Expeditionary Forces. During this period she also made several special voyages. President Woodrow Wilson and the American representatives sailed for Europe to the Paris Peace Conference aboard the George Washington on 4 December 1918. After carrying 4000 soldiers back home to the U.S., George Washington carried Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Franklin Roosevelt and the Chinese and Mexican peace commissions to France in January 1919. On 24 February, she returned President Wilson to the United States.

 

Accompanying this group of Newspapers are 7 original vintage black and white photos taken during the voyages, including one of President Woodrow Wilson, and 3 photos of Sailors entertaining the troops dressed in drag.

 

All neatly housed in individual custom cloth folders, with the entire set then housed in a double custom clamshell with a leather quarter spine with raised bands and gilt tiles blocked in red.

And one undated passenger list which lists as passengers "The President, The Secretary of State, The French Ambassador, The Italian Ambassador and The American Ambassador to England", along with numerous Secret Service agents, Assistants, Specialists, Clerks, General Staff and Personal Attendants included.

Applicable shipping and handling charges will be added to the invoice. We offer several shipping options, and remain one of the few auction houses who proudly provides professional in-house shipping as an option to our clients. All items will ship with signature required, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice, unless you inform us otherwise, immediately upon your receipt of invoice***

Third Party Shipping Option: If a third party shipper is preferred, the buyer is responsible for contacting them directly to make shipping arrangements. For your convenience, we have provided some recommended shippers. For your protection, we will require a signed release from you, confirming your authorization for us to release your lots to your specified third party. At that point, our responsibility and insurance coverage for your item(s) ceases. Items picked up by third party shippers are required to pay Connecticut sales tax. Items requiring third party shipping due to being oversized, fragile or bulky will be denoted in the item description.

After payment has been made in full, University Archives will ship your purchase within 5 business days following receipt of full payment for item.Packages shipped internationally will have full value declared on shipping form. International buyers will be responsible for any customs fees incurred.
