A 1p autograph letter signed by Franklin Pierce (1804-1869), the Democratic Party presidential candidate who would be elected as 14th U.S. President just two weeks later, as "Frank. Pierce" near lower right. October 21, 1852. Concord, New Hampshire. Inscribed on cream-colored paper. Expected wear including light transmittal folds, and a barely visible rusted paperclip impression at upper left. A former collector's pencil inscription found verso. Else near fine. 6.5" x 8.75." Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity from Alan Shawn Feinstein & Associates (Cranston, Rhode Island).

Franklin Pierce wrote this thank-you note to a well-wisher from Ann Arbor, Michigan named Edward S. Welles, in part: "Accept my thanks for your kind wishes expressed in your note of the 16th inst…"

Welles had probably congratulated Pierce on his nomination as the Democratic Party's presidential candidate. Pierce was a dark horse candidate at the Democratic National Convention held in Baltimore, Maryland between June 1-5, 1852. After mainstream candidates had all been eliminated, Pierce swept in as a compromise candidate on the 49th ballot.

Pierce would decisively defeat Whig presidential candidate Winfield Scott at the 1852 presidential election held on November 2, 1852, securing more than 50% of the popular vote and over 250 Electoral College votes. Pierce won the state of Michigan and 26 others!
